Why You Should Get a Greek Tax ID (AFM) Before Moving to Greece

October 21, 2024

As we've mentioned in our previous article, getting an AFM is one of the first things you must obtain before the big move to Greece.

Pronounced as 'afimi', this nine-digit number is used for carrying out basic administrative tasks, such as opening bank accounts, securing property contracts or lease agreements, and getting a driving license. Obtaining an AFM or Greek Tax ID allows you to open an account on TaxisNet, which is the government-based online registry system where your important transactions and tax filings take place.

In other words, securing your Greek Tax ID before you come to Greece will save you the hassle from scrambling for paperwork or going back and forth to the Foreign Tax Office. You will probably want to be focusing on more important tasks, such as signing the lease for your new home, or finding the right neighborhood in the Greek regions that suits your needs.
